Product Description:

Zenith's 17-inch L17W36 LCD doubles as both a PC and an HDTV monitor. It has a built-in NTSC tuner and it accepts cable/antenna, HDTV, satellite dish and NTSC video sources. The L17W36 features a 1280 x 960 pixel resolution, a 16:9 aspect ratio, built-in speakers (5 watts per channel), 3-line digital comb filter, Dolby virtual surround sound, and multiple inputs for DVD players, game consoles, and more. With its 400:1 high-contrast ratio, the LCD emits sharp contrast between light and dark images. The 450 candelas per square meter (cd/m2) brightness level renders a distinctly bright picture--even in light-drenched environments. The picture-in-picture (PIP) function enables you to put a smaller picture--called the inset--on the larger screen. The DCDi line doubler (manufactured by industry leader Faroudja) provides double the number of scan lines to create a cinema-like effect and eliminates jagged lines and artifacts along diagonal lines--creating a sharper, crisper picture. Included Jacks 1 high-res component video, 1 RGB in, 1 S-Video in, 2 A/V in, 1 RF, and 1 headphone. What's in the Box This package includes the Zenith L13V36 LCD and power cord. It's backed by the following limited warranty: 1 year for parts, 1 year for labor.

Comment: Excellent Picture, Wide HDTV, PIP, PC monitor under 1K! Rating: Rating: 5
Our review is based on the fact our unit has not broken down in the month we've had it (unlike the other 1 review currently published here). We love this set. The picture quality is superb, even with SDTV via Time Warner digital cable. HDTV output is fabulous. Nice bright images with good contrast without the usual "noise" which was our primary criteria for choosing this unit. Sound quality is good for a bedroom but there are no audio outs for those wanting to add additional speakers (we didn't). It is VESA compliant and is under $1K usually. It also has PIP with an additional tuner (VCR) and can be used as a computer monitor. What more can you ask for a thousand bucks.

Comment: Nice while it lasted! Rating: Rating: 1
After only 3 weeks of infrequent use, this TV failed. All of a sudden there was no picture upon powering up. Prior to this I found that the clock setting feature didn't work. Obtaining service has been a nightmare. Zenith sent me to the closest service center, 30 miles away. A few hours after dropping off the TV, the service center called to inform me that Zenith told them it could only be serviced by the factory! Zenith refused to replace it with a new one. I've been given no idea of an estimated return date. Other than that, the picture was very nice, programming was easy and the set's attractive. Plugging in cables was difficult. There's only a headphone audio out, not left & right channels. Switching between input devices was slow as was changing channels. Setting favorite channels was very slow. Update: received TV-picture OK but clock still not working. Service Dept. said clock chip a known defect, but no date for fix. Why didn't they send me a new set with a good clock? After several calls to Service & Customer Service, Zenith agreed to refund the full purchase price upon return (again) of the set. Could've been much worse, I guess. Contacting Zenith was easy & the staff were pleasant and helpful, but I still wasted much time on this. Can anybody suggest a TV to replace this one?

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
