Product Description:

Toshiba's incredibly thin, high-definition-ready 32-inch TheaterWide 32HL84 flat-panel LCD TV puts you right in the action, offering up detailed images no matter what source you're using--DVD player, digital TV set-top box, digital satellite receiver, or cable television box. The 16:9-aspect-ratio set is capable of true 720p HDTV resolution when connected to an optional HD receiver; has an outstanding 800:1 contrast ratio, with Toshiba's HD Dynamic Contrast increasing contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images; and enough connections for almost anything. For starters, the 1,280-x-768-resolution set has two high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs and a digital video interface (DVI) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (not included). Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them. Two sets of rear A/V inputs and a set of front A/V inputs (all including S-video) get your camcorder or gaming console quickly and easily connected, and a rear A/V output--choose from fixed- or variable-level audio outputs--lets you hook up a surround receiver. Improving upon standard interlaced signals like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs, Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 720p resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, further eliminating video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown switch) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP sound for listening to two programs simultaneously, TheaterLink IR (for working your video components by pointing the remote at the TV screen, letting you hide your components), individual audio/video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, speed tuning, SurfLock, and a host of parental controls including GameTimer (letting you set a time limit for playing video games), channel lock, and video input lock. Set it on a table using the supplied stand or mount it on the wall using optional brackets for ultimate space efficiency. Aside from the 10-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 32HL84 uses Toshiba's Sub-Bass System (SBS), which heightens the impact of low-frequency audio. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). Two-channel simulated surround is available as well thanks to Dolby Virtual Surround. What's in the Box 32HL84 32-inch flat-panel LCD TV, 6-item illuminated universal remote with DVD control, warranty, and user's manual.

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
