Telcos Face Tough Road Deploying IPTV: Report

[Archived in Entry]

[Policani's Digital Media Blog] Matthew Friedman writes, "After the false starts of the late 1990s, North American telecommunications carriers are salivating at the prospect of delivering television to consumers over their IP networks. However, a new report from Forrester research notes that, for all their excitement, "it is a long road from today's flashy Consumer Electronics Show (CES) demos to mass adoption of telco IPTV."

David H. Deans Weblog - Technology Marketing and Consulting: Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) port shipments grew at a solid rate in 2004, but the rate of growth is expected to decline in coming years as the DSL market matures, reports In-Stat. The competition in the DSLAM market is fierce with many large global vendors and small vendors competing for contracts, a trend that will shrink average selling prices over the next several years, the high-tech market research firm says. "Worldwide DSLAM revenues will stay relatively flat, ranging from $3.1 - $3.3 billion over the next several years," says Henry Goldberg, In-Stat analyst. "The market will be highly competitive, with vendors increasing revenues only by taking market share away from other vendors." Alcatel had the leading market share in all regions, except the Asia-Pacific region, in 2004.

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
