Starz drops analog feed

[Archived in Entry, HDTV]

http://www.hdbeat.com [HD Beat] If you want to receive programming from Starz in 2006 and beyond, you can't use that 18-foot antenna that your parents bought twenty years ago. Starz is dropping their analog signal for C-Band subscribers on December 31st, 2005.

http://hdtv.engadget.com [Hdtv.engadget.com] Voom = dead (this time we’re pretty sure) - HDTV - hdtv.engadget.com: There have been so many twists and turns to the story of the massively unsuccessful high-definition satellite TV provider’s demise (which we can’t be bothered to recap at this point) that we really hesitate to make any sort of conclusive pronouncement, but Cablevision’s board of directors voted unanimously yesterday evening to shut things down, thus ending Cablevision chairman Charles Dolan’s last ditch efforts to save his baby (he’d been trying to figure something out, but apparently he gave up, and was among those who voted to shutter Voom).

[Buyinghdtv.com] 2004 HDTV News Blog Archives: The problem of course is that most channels are not yet broadcast in high-def, meaning that HDTV owners are either forced to adjust their viewing habits and watch programming just because it’s in high-def or put up with the inferior picture quality of the channels they’re used to watching. Maybe this is why a recent study I saw from IDC reported that only 20% of digital TV owners actually watch HD or digital content on their new sets, with the rest using it primarily for DVDs.

Pvrblog.com[Pvrblog.com] Newsweek: Netflix and TiVo to announce partnership, offer ...: Noodling Netflix: In the hoopla over a possible linkup between Netflix and TiVo, something appears to have been lost on investors: Even if the two strike some kind of deal allowing Netflix (NFLX: news, chart, profile) subscribers to access movies by downloading them onto a TiVo for a monthly subscription price or on a pay-per-view basis, it's unlikely the library of titles will be anywhere near the 25,000 Netflix now claims -- at least not any time soon. Ditto Netflix's plans to offer download services, which the company has suggested will happen next year.

[Technology360.typepad.com] Technology360: The recently announced deals with Starz On Demand will add more than 1,500 films per year to that count. ¶

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
