OpenTV announces IPTV solution

[Archived in Entry]

[Reinvent TV] OpenTV says the product is aimed both at new entrants to the digital TV market, and cable or satellite operators that may wish to take advantage of their existing infrastructure in deploying internet protocol services. It will also enable over 35 set-top box manufacturer licensees to deliver IP capable set-top boxes with OpenTV Core middleware. OpenTV software is deployed in 50 million set-top boxes in 96 countries.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[ International Entertainment News] OpenTV Appoints Technology Veteran Arata Hirao as General Manager, Representative Director of OpenTV Japan: "It is with enthusiasm that we welcome Arata Hirao to OpenTV," said Michael Ivanchenko, OpenTV's senior vice president & managing director Asia Pacific. "His wealth of experience will help us immensely in further developing and realizing the full potential of our suite of digital TV products and services, and better serve the business needs of the Japanese technology, broadband and cable markets. Arata-san will be instrumental in driving OpenTV sales and partnerships throughout Japan."

http://informitv.com [informitv - Interactive TV] OpenTV revenues up and losses reduced: As a former cable executive, Jim Chiddix said he had heard no indication that Comcast or other operators are not fully in support of OCAP, the open standard middleware based on MHP. He said “OCAP we think will come in due course and we intend to have products that we sell in an OCAP world”. He concluded that “We would be happy to sell middleware to operators, but also happy to sell other products.”

[:: www.irunix.com ::] TiVo struggles for niche after quitting cable deal: His plan--called Tahiti--involves several technological innovations intended to let TiVo thrive without the cooperation of cable companies. Devices will be able to send recorded programs to personal computers and to download programs from the Internet as well, taking advantage of a standard mandated by the government that, in theory, would allow TiVo to directly connect to cable systems. Also, he said TiVo would move beyond video recorders to a broader product line involved in the convergence between computers and television, including software that would allow a home computer to record television programs. This would put TiVo into direct competition with other companies, like Sony, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft.

http://informitv.com [informitv - Interactive TV] AFI Enhanced Television Workshop review: An example from the prototype showed how to measure the perimeter of baseball diamond and then allowed the viewer to see this presented in a different way, engage in quizzes, games and related math lessons. A collaboration between NDS, Sun, and NPTV from Paris using their iTV Factory authoring suite, this project involved tweaking a French Thomson satellite set-top box to run NTSC.

http://informitv.com [informitv - Interactive TV] OpenTV reports reduced losses: In the three months to the end of September, OpenTV reported a loss from operations of $6.1m, down from $12m for the same period the previous year. Total revenues for the quarter were $16.5m, down slightly from $17m for the same quarter in the previous year, although an additional $1.6m of delayed revenue is expected to be recognised in the final quarter. Royalties made up $9.2m, up from $6.7m for the equivalent period.

Siliconvalley.internet.com[Siliconvalley.internet.com] OpenTV Eyes Easier Interactive TV Solution: Demonstrated at the Mountain View, California companys Annual OpenTV User Group Conference in Barcelona, Spain, the iTV Service Platform Suite is flexible, working across multiple operating systems, middleware and set-top box platforms. The suite integrates all of the necessary ingredients of a successful iTV service, including communication, commerce, advertising management and customer relationships.

Siliconvalley.internet.com[Siliconvalley.internet.com] OpenTV, Ticketmaster Team On New iTV App: The H2O platform helps boost set-to-boxes that are unable to support an embedded Web browser. The software converts online content authored in HTML and JavaScript into iTV applications, which are then broadcast to OpenTV-powered set-top boxes. OpenTV's boasts its middleware is installed in more than 27 million set-top boxes worldwide.

Internetnews.com[Internetnews.com] Putting HTML on iTV: The company, which is backed by AOL Time Warner (Quote, Chart), EchoStar Communications (Quote, Chart) and Sun Microsystems (Quote, Chart), said the new tools are aimed at making it easier for networks and content producers to leverage existing HTML skills and content to create interactive television features and ads. That iTV content now also can be delivered to both thick and thin clients -- overcoming a significant obstacle to the expansion of interactive TV services, advertising and commerce.

[Au.sys-con.com] OpenTV Reports 2005 First Quarter Results @ au.sys-con.com: Speaking of religion, the overtones of which often define political discourse in the U.S. today and IT debates worldwide, the first word in this blogentry's headline relates to an English religious debate long-forgotten by most, while the headline's second word bespeaks the non-religious holy grail of global business. My idea for using the first word in the head was simply to find something longer

Wheii.comhttp://www.wheii.com [Wheii.com] | Wheii.com | blog: Through compression technology it is now possible to offer standard broadcast quality television over an Internet connection of 1 Megabit per second (Mbs). High definition TV can be offered if a consumer has a broadband Web connection that allows four to five Mbs.

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
