MPEG4: Coming Soon to your HDTV Living Room

[Archived in Entry, HDTV, HDTV]

[HDBlog.net] Cable and satelite providers are racing to transition from MPEG2 based devices to ones that use the MPEG4 in order to satisfy consumer demand for HD content. I say it’s about time!

Some related posts from Technorati and Google.

http://blog.megacity.org [Derek's Rantings and Musings] Video iPod And Such: If you can support HD content, playing that output directly onto a HDTV monitor is a nobrainer, no set-top-box required. (Although, admittedly, STBs will probably be a part of it, so that the computer doesn't have to be physically mated to the TV).

Digitalspy.co.ukhttp://www.digitalspy.co.uk [Digitalspy.co.uk] Digital Spy: Analysis: HDTV, future of DVD, and HDMI: Digital Spy's Alan Jay analyses the medium-term development of HDTV in the UK. The HD-DVD disk will come in 3 sizes when first launched.

Chris.pirillo.comhttp://chris.pirillo.com [Chris.pirillo.com] HDTV Happiness (Chris Pirillo): They are launching new satellites throughout this year that are MPEG4-capable, which essentially means they will be able to carry more HD channels. Specifically, they mention carrying the locally broadcast networks (NBC, ABC, CBS, and FOX) for each of the top 100 markets in HD.

http://hdtvinfo.blogspot.com [Hdtvinfo.blogspot.com] HDTV Television: IRVINE, Calif., June 13, 2005 -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in wired and wireless broadband communications semiconductors, today reinforced its leadership position in the set-top box semiconductor market by participating in the world's first demonstration of MPEG-4 compressed, high definition (HD) live TV broadcasting over an operational ADSL2+ network. Alcatel, Broadcom, France Telecom and TANDBERG collaborated on the HDTV over ADSL2+ technology demonstration, which took place at the French Open Tennis Tournament at Roland Garros Stadium in France, June 2, 2005.

Electricdeath.comhttp://www.electricdeath.com [Electricdeath.com] [EED] Blog 817 - i want my hdtv!: How can we arrive at the ludicrous situation where I am downloading American television episodes on my broadband and these rips, off HDTV sources in the US and transcoded to MPEG-4 for nice tidy 350MB downloads, are substantially better quality than my own fucking subscriber digital television?! To say nothing of the fact that I'm sitting back here watching ReGenesis and it's got the original AC3 sound track so I've got the full audio experience too.

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
