Media Monkeying

[Archived in Abc Hdtv, Entry]

Media Monkeying Gene Cowan on 2003/05/31:

„So, I’d switch to WMAR in Baltimore - who not only send a full high definition picture, but accompany it with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. Even Disney-owned ABC has complained - it didn’t help that the ABC affiliate in Washington didn’t transmit HDTV when Disney was working in Congress to shape digital television. So, my attitude toward losing WJLA on satellite is… “eh.”“

Some slightly related:

Amazon.com: Electronics: Samsung SIR-TS160 Multiple Platform DirectTV Receiver

„One other thing to consider...ABC broadcasts in 720p (a different type of HDTV signal). I was not able to watch ABC HDTV programs on the Hughes unit. This unit was supposed to be able to decode this signal but Hughes technical support told me that they were having trouble with their receivers decoding the 720p signal. The Samsung has no trouble processing the 720p signal.“

HDTV (where available)

„There seems to be some difficulty at WJLA in the button-pushing needed to pass through the high definition feed of “The Music Man” from the network, just as there was last month with “The Sound of Music”. So, despite the “In HDTV” note on the WJLA and ABC websites, I’m watching a low-def square picture on my expensive widescreen HDTV, recording it on a $20 D-VHS tape on a $1000 HD-VCR. What a waste.“

HDTV Update: FOX Finally Joins In

„In a previous 2002 article, "Fox Turns Chicken On HDTV", I commented on the FOX television network's lack of commitment to HDTV broadcasting, although its major competitors, ABC, CBS, and NBC were moving ahead. Now, it seems that FOX, faced with a decided technical disadvantage, has finally had a change of heart. Check out my update and perspective on this issue...“

WB To Expand HD Lineup

„All WB/HDTV programs will be broadcast in the 1080i format. The WB may not have as strong a ratings presence as NBC, ABC, CBS, or FOX, but it is definitely ahead in HDTV technology over number four, FOX, which doesn't plan to broadcast an HDTV schedule until Fall 2004. For more details on WB's anticipated HDTV broadcast schedule. Check out the above report from TWICE .“

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
