HDTV: Exposing the Ugly Side of Beauty

[Archived in Entry, Hdtv's]

HDTV: Exposing the Ugly Side of Beauty Eric on 2004/01/08:

„High-definition television -- which shows pictures that are larger and nearly five times as sharp as those on a regular set -- has the image-obsessed television business worried that a growing audience will see more reality than it wants: the wrinkles on once-ageless actors, the cracks in set walls, the brush strokes on painted backdrops. To avoid turning off viewers, Hollywood's illusion specialists in makeup, set design and lighting are finding ways to counter HDTV's less-forgiving eye.“

Is It Time for a High-Definition TV?

„That depends first on your budget. Though HDTV prices are dropping, they're still up to three times higher than the price you'd pay for a top-of-the-line analog set of comparable size.“

High Def Forum - Your High Definition Community & High Definition Resource - HDTV Receiver

„I am new to the HDTV. If you have a tv with the HDTV tuner built in, you still need a HDTV receiver to get HD channels from DTV, right? How much extra per month is the HD programming and how many channels are available?“

Home Theater Magazine: Got HDTV?

„And, of course, digital TV enables high-definition television, which has spectacular picture quality and is usually available with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. I've been watching over-the-air digital television since the fall of 1999, using a variety of indoor and outdoor antennas and several generations of DTV set-top receivers. As I write this, I can watch 13 different DTV stations from as far away as 70 miles, using a modest rooftop antenna and preamp. I can pick up six of these stations indoors in my home or office with an even smaller antenna.“

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
