Finding Nemo - DLP

[Archived in Dlp, Entry]

Finding Nemo - DLP Kamel on 2003/06/02:

„DLP rocks when it comes to CG Movies like this. But, DLP sucks ass when it comes to real life imagery. I think that if a movie is all CG, like Nemo, it should be shown on DLP. But if the movie is filmed on 35mm, like X2, then don't even think about showing it digitally.“

DLP TV Buying Guide: Plasma TV vs DLP TVs

„They will soon be available in 72- and 84-inch diagonal image sizes, too. Moreover, DLPs are slimmer than other rear projection TVs, measuring around 15" to 17" in depth. RCA claims to have a couple of prototypes in the 50- and 61-inch size image range that will actually hang on the wall! Manufacturers are working hard to create slimmer DLP displays to suit more applications.“

Home Theater Magazine: XV-Z9000U DLP Projector

„In terms of video performance, DLP-projection technology for home theater applications has just taken a major leap forward. Sharp's new XV-Z9000U is the first DLP projector based on Texas Instruments' new native 16:9, 1,280-by-720-resolution chip. This projector promises to radically change the front-projector market, as it offers unprecedented picture quality in its product category at a very reasonable price. At a list price of $10,995, the XV-Z9000U comes close to delivering the same picture quality as 7- and 8-inch CRT-based front projectors that range in price from $15,000 to $30,000.“

The Perfect Vision- Shootout! SIM2 HT500 LINK, Three-Chip DLP Projector

„(Blacks rule!) But while the absolute blacks are getting better with newer DLPs, I haven’t seen as big an increase in actual resolving power near black. While I like the increased dynamics for sure, even the most dynamic digital projectors like the Marantz aren’t yet in the CRT neighborhood of natural, smooth resolution of detail near black. While the Marantz has deeper blacks and a better contrast ratio, the SIM2, perhaps due to its more CRT-like gamma curve, moved down into black in a more seamless way, and produced an image that I found to be slightly more film-like, and certainly more reminiscent of the time I’ve spent with CRT front projectors.“

Samsung HL-P5063W 50-inch DLP HDTV

„Samsung has made several very solid RPTV units based on DLP (Digital Light Processor) from Texas Instruments, and our Nick Stam's long-running HDTV buying odyssey ultimately led him to a Samsung DLP-based RPTV. Samsung is back with a new 50" unit that leverages TI's latest DLP chip, the HD3, a 1280x720 micro-display ASIC aimed at helping HDTV makers reduce the cost of RPTVs using DLP technology.“

DLP is getting hot

„In the third quarter, the company reported better that expected revenues because of company’s Digital Light Processing (DLP) and wireless digital signal processor (DSP) products. DLPs are used in newer televisions, and according to the company, DLP based TVs have started to outsell plasma TVs in North America . (Christmas is coming, so this could be even better news, and in case any readers wants me to have one, well send it my way.) I think the company might have a bigger hit on its hands: the rise of cheap projectors in my view is going to increase DLP penetration. Who needs a big TV when you can get a tiny DLP projector that does the trick, and well doesn't take too much room, and is cheaper.“

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
