DLP Analysis

[HDBlog.net] They also have a few interesting prices charts, showing how plasma and LCD have been coming down in price, while only the smaller DLP sets have been doing so. Take the prose with a grain of salt, but the charts make interesting reading.

MovieTimeDV10

[Krunker] Take the MovieTimeDV10 - it’s a DVD player and a video projector all wrapped up into one device. The projector is even a DLP projector too and has a 4000:1 contrast ratio and a brightness of 1000 lumens.

Inshon Shows 100”³ DLP RPTV

[HDBlog.net] Inshon is showing off such a beast at the Computex show. Not much is said about this unit beyond the fact that it’ll be available in the second half of 2006 with a resolution of 720p or 1080p. Kind of leaves things open, huh? Methinks this product might not be ready for a while…

LCD Vertical Banding or DLP Rainbows?

[HDBlog.net] Two of the most popular television technologies are, of course, DLP and LCD. Each has their own pluses and minuses, and they aren’t necessarily the same. One of DLP’s problems is the rainbow effect that’s caused by the spinning colour wheel. And one of LCD’s problems is the vertical banding effect. Vertical banding, though, doesn’t happen with every LCD display. Projector Central discusses the issue. Link: Projector Central - LCD vertical banding or DLP rainbows?...

JVC D-ILA and Samsung DLP

[HDBlog.net] Bios Magazine has a quick overview of the JVC DLA-HX2E. This is a D-ILA (aka LCOS) projector with a resolution of 1400x788. It has a contrast ratio of 1500:1 and brightness of 500 ANSI Lumens. It uses three D-ILA chips, so no colour-wheel is required. LCOS projectors are known for their cinema-like smoothness, and supposedly this one is no different. Link: Bios Magazine - JVC Brings Hollywood Home With New Projector ultimate AV’s coverage of the Samsung SP-H700AE DLP projector, on the other hand, is not just a quick overview. ultimate AV has always known how to do reviews right, and they don’t skimp out here. Joe Kane helped Samsung design this projector, so you know it’s gotta be good. The projector has a manual focus and zoom and a lens shift feature, albeit just a vertical one. Note that the Genesis processor in this projector deinterlaces 1080i to 1080p before scaling down to 720p. Has the era of single-chip, HD2+ DLP projectors that cost over $10,000 receded into history?...

Cinego D-1000 DLP Projector

[Krunker] The Cinego D-1000 DLP Projector is now available online at Radioshack.com. The D-1000 has a built in DVD player and a 2.1 sound system making this a great portable A/V option. Some features include: resolutions up to 854 x 480, contrast ratios of 1500:1, and video projection sizes up to 140 inches.

Toshiba 52HM94 52”³ DLP RPTV

[HDBlog.net] Sound & Vision magazine has reviewed the Toshiba 52HM94 52”³ DLP RPTV. With a bit of tweaking, Toshiba’s 52HM94 DLP HDTV is capable of delivering stunning pictures. And its wide viewing angle lets the whole family enjoy the same bright image and vibrant color from any seat on the couch. Unfortunately, Toshiba’s problems with the TV Guide On Screen feature could be a serious issue for anyone who expects to use a Cable CARD or purchase the optional Symbio hard-disk recorder. But if, like me, you already have a high-def cable box with a hard-disk video recorder, you’ll find a lot to like here. Link: Sound & Vision - Toshiba 52-inch DLP HDTV...

DLP is getting hot

Damon Darlin on 2004/10/20:

„In the third quarter, the company reported better that expected revenues because of company’s Digital Light Processing (DLP) and wireless digital signal processor (DSP) products. DLPs are used in newer televisions, and according to the company, DLP based TVs have started to outsell plasma TVs in North America . (Christmas is coming, so this could be even better news, and in case any readers wants me to have one, well send it my way.) I think the company might have a bigger hit on its hands: the rise of cheap projectors in my view is going to increase DLP penetration. Who needs a big TV when you can get a tiny DLP projector that does the trick, and well doesn't take too much room, and is cheaper.“

Finding Nemo - DLP

Finding Nemo - DLP Kamel on 2003/06/02:

„DLP rocks when it comes to CG Movies like this. But, DLP sucks ass when it comes to real life imagery. I think that if a movie is all CG, like Nemo, it should be shown on DLP. But if the movie is filmed on 35mm, like X2, then don't even think about showing it digitally.“

HDTVs: Sharper, Bigger, Better

HDTVs have high resolutions that yield incredibly lifelike pictures, wide screens to accommodate the 16:9 aspect ratio of HD programming and DVD movies, and Dolby Digital decoding for theater-quality audio. Here are the choices--flat-panel or projection, you can't go wrong.

Flat-panel LCD TVs: LCD flat-panels offer bright, crisp picture quality, are highly energy-efficient, have 60,000-hour life spans, and come in a range of screen sizes, though all under 50 inches.

Flat-panel plasma TVs: Plasma flat-panels have extremely accurate picture detail, high brightness, wide viewing angles, and large, wall-mountable screens--from 37 to over 60 inches.

Projection TVs: Your big-screen choices are CRT, LCD, DLP, and LCoS. The first two are tried-and-true technologies; DLP and LCoS are hot microdisplay technologies that provide superb picture detail and brightness in lighter-weight cabinets.
